Bio:Born in Fremont, CA and lived three months in California. (Way too young to remember.) Lived in Redmond, WA for 12 years then Carnation, WA. Went to UW and got my BS in Medical Technology and spent a year in The Gambia, West Africa with the Peace Corps. After returning to the states, worked as a clinical microbiologist at the UW Medical Center. Lately I've been studying relatively random material, and am now looking for new work.

Learned to program computers by seven (potentially earlier, but memory gets fuzzy) and now it's not so much "something I do" as "personal background". I'm a reformed computer geek, still thoroughly attached to my internet connection, but the computer no longer defines who I am, nor has it in many, many years. Nonetheless, I have an intuitive feel for things technological. By no means an expert on any of it anymore, but odds are that I can pick up how to use a new piece of gear faster than your average bear. Kind've like someone who's grown up on a ranch, perhaps, being able to work with animals easily even years after the immersion of daily exposure.

Learning and teaching have always been important elements in my life, even if it's only a recent personal revelation. Never was a particularly good student, exactly. Prodigy syndrome hit very early on and I really couldn't be bothered to apply myself to school work beneath my intellect, or so my thinking went at the time. My view was that school was for learning, not for working. Homework was only legitimate if something was to be learned through the act, and generally there were no benefit from doing it so frequently I wouldn't bother. Teaching is fulfilling now, because I can cut through the bullshit and focus on just getting the knowledge across.

Peace Corps was seriously life defining in many ways. Far removed from the developed world, it allowed me to reflect upon many of the assumptions we use to anchor our way of living. No clocks, no artificial light other than flame, limited options and resources, limited distances in daily travel, questionable water sources, and the dilemma of toilet paper and toilet facilities. As a biologist it was fascinating to consider how the human organism was far more accustomed to that environment, rather than our technologically-reliant Northern climes. Seems that I can now see more shades of grey, having been able to change how I view the minimums and maximums for many elements of daily life that are otherwise ignored. Also had a lot of fun, and also saw some things that still disturb me many years afterwards.

Lately my interests, personal and professional, have geared themselves far more to the natural world. Whether marveling in the rich array of life in the Cascades or examining the rich array of life living in, on, and sometimes harming the human body, the new programming I study is that of biology. What processes make these things possible? How can we better live in a world with all of these different forms of life? In particular, an interest in symbiosis has been fueled by seeing parasites at work, a passionate biology professor, and the works of Lynn Margulis who actually has some interesting things to say in rebuttal of neo-Darwinist teachings. Probably will end up leading to graduate studies at some point.

In the meantime I'm always looking for novel experiences, particularly opportunities that might not repeat themselves. As James says, "Think of the story!", and I say go with it because when you're old and grey, all you'll have left are your stories and maybe the accumulated crap of a lifetime of materialism. Frankly, I'd rather have more stories and less crap.
